B.B.
ENGLISH OPENBACK $379SOLD
really
nice sounding for a light banjo, in very good shape!
it has a rolled tone ring. probably from around 1900!
nice straight neck, plays good!
BLUE
COMET OPENBACK**, Circa 1920's, $329, VGC SOLD
has a wooden tonering/rim
and a skin head. a nice oldtimey sound, not a lot of volume but a typical
warm sound and good tone for this type of construction (wooden tonering).
i've cut away a bit of the metal on the rim in the area where your
thumb plays to make it easier to get that sweet tone by playing over the end
of the neck (the oldtimey scoop, for frailing), and added the wooden
armrest. **the
logo is really cool looking on the headstock!
COLUMBIA OPENBACK, EX-PLECTRUM $395, VGC, PICS
»SOLD BANJOS
it has a rolled
tonering on top of the rim, and so has more brightness and projection than a
wood rim/tonering. my conversion, i've suspended the 5th string out in
space, so it's a little hard for fret, unless you play air banjo! If you
don't play melody on the 5th it's no big deal (most oldtimey players
don't). lovely birds eye maple on the side of the rim too! plastic
head.
a fine sounding banjo with good projection!

GIBSON MASTERTONE
RB-250 w/Huber tonering, #738309, 1970, $1500 »SOLD BANJOS
rob
horgans' banjo (on consignment)! a good sounding mastertone, with medium wear,
as you can see in the pictures, but that's probably why it sounds so good!
railroad spikes at 7, 8, 9 & 10.
GOLDSTAR Mastertone copy $950, in very good shape! No longer produced, SOLD!
GIBSON
PROFESSIONAL Style 6 with later Mastertone pot $1590 VG+
PICS »SOLD BANJOS
neck is
circa 1927-1937, pot is much newer, flathead. a most unusual banjo, might
have been a custom, extra wide neck plectrum! it has all 5 tuners on the headstock, and a place at the 5th fret where a
railroad spike had been, although i've tuned it up to standard tuning with
no problem, without the spike.
GIBSON
MASTERTONE FLATTOP 1925, VG+ With
new neck in the original style made by Larry Cohea in 1978! PICS
»SOLD BANJOS
Tube and
Plate construction, 3 ply rim. the banjo is really in very good shape for its'
age, just needs some polishing on the hardware. it has a really great sound,
as you might expect from a pot of this vintage, and the neck is a fine neck
also! if this was all original it would be about $8,000, so this is a bargain
for that vintage flattop mastertone sound!
GRETSCH OPENBACK $349
VGC+
ANOTHER BASIC OPENBACK THAT I LIKE, WITH NO TONERING, SIMILAR
TO THE ABOVE KAYS. THIS ONE ALSO HAS A SWEET RING IN THE UPPER REGISTER,
AND A NICE COLOR TO THE MAPLE!
JB SCHALL, CIRCA 1900,
DOUBLE-SPUN OR DOUBLE-CLAD RIM $550 SOLD
engraved German Silver plates on the peghead and
fingerboard, and all star neck inlays like these (and like the banjo PICTURED »HERE
«
). The banjo itself is in very good shape, but the
plating on the pot is worn. It has a newer metal armrest, and old no-knot
tailpiece. These double clad banjo rims are BRIGHT sounding, and
so I have this one strung nylon, which sounds really nice! You might find it a
little bright with steel strings.
OPENBACK, EX-PLECTRUM $395, VGC it has a rolled tonering on top of the rim, and so has more brightness and projection than a wood rim/tonering. my conversion, i've suspended the 5th string out in space, so it's a little hard to fret, unless you play air banjo! If you don't play melody on the 5th it's no big deal (most oldtimey players don't). lovely flame maple on the side of the rim and the neck too! plastic head. a fine sounding banjo with good projection! SOLD
